How the Wren Sterling Integration Team supports acquired firms and their clients

Janine Scruton

I manage the end-to-end integration of acquisitions, overseeing the full project lifecycle from early planning through to business‑as‑usual handover. Wren Sterling has acquired over 30 firms of varying sizes right across the UK, so we have a lot of experience!

On paper, it’s about managing workstreams, timelines and getting it all delivered, but in reality, I focus as much on people as I do on the plan.

A big part of my role is creating clarity, building trust, and helping teams feel supported and confident through change, not just delivering the project.

Understanding people and emotions

While there’s a strong delivery and governance element, what’s often underestimated is that integration is also an emotional journey for everyone involved.

For the businesses we bring in, it can mean significant change and new ways of working, and uncertainty about the future. My team is empathetic towards this, and we know that taking the time to get to know our new colleagues is essential for creating a strong working relationship.

Minimising disruption

Our approach is designed to minimise disruption. We focus on getting the big, critical elements in place first, while phasing smaller changes in over an agreed period of time to avoid unnecessary impact on clients and teams. We understand how important stability is, and we aim to integrate in a way that feels measured and manageable, rather than overwhelming.

We’ve successfully integrated a large number of acquisitions, and with each one we’ve continued to refine our approach. We actively build feedback loops into every integration, capturing insight from advisers, support teams affected and using that to continuously improve how we deliver. This means our approach today is shaped by real experience, not theory.

Integration is a core part of what we do. We have a dedicated, experienced team and a well‑established approach, so there is very little we haven’t seen before, but every acquisition is different, so we are always learning. That experience allows us to move at pace, anticipate challenges early, and guide businesses through the process with confidence.

We’re also pragmatic and flexible. There are often multiple ways to approach integration, and we take the time to listen and understand how the business operates today and their preferences. Where something works well, we will absolutely support it. Where experience tells us there are risks, we will guide teams towards the best outcome, always based on what we know works in practice.

Ultimately, success comes from bringing people with you. When you get that right, the process becomes much more effective, and the outcomes are stronger for colleagues, advisers, and most importantly, clients.
