What is mental wellbeing?

‘Mental wellbeing’ is a combination of elements that influence how we feel. It includes our mental and physical health, as well as our overall wellbeing at work and at home. It can affect our mood or ability to concentrate and poor mental wellbeing in the workplace can lead to increased absences, low morale and engagement, straining relationships at work.

Employees who feel happy, healthy and supported can approach work in the right frame of mind to be productive, with everyone seeing the benefit of a healthier workforce.

What can employers provide for mental wellbeing in the workplace?

Employers can support employee mental wellbeing in various ways. As mental wellbeing is often a combination of their physical and mental health, you may want to consider including physical and financial wellbeing support, which our Workplace team can also advise on.

Why is mental wellbeing in the workplace important?

We believe people are much more productive when they’re not stressed. That might be over-simplifying it – but we believe the power of understanding your finances and feeling confident in the future cannot be understated. If you suspect people are struggling, you can affect positive change through a mental wellbeing programme.

  • Increased productivity – Employees who are less stressed can focus better on the task at hand, leading to increased productivity at work.
  • Reduced sickness and absenteeism – Stress and anxiety about your work can affect mental and physical health. Supported employees are more resilient and less susceptible to illness.
  • Improved employee engagement – Employees who value their employee benefits, less likely to seek employment elsewhere, lowering turnover and recruitment costs.
  • A more efficient benefits strategy – With better take-up for employee benefits, employers may be able to find efficiencies and maximise the support they’re able to offer their employees.
