Is there a difference between a financial planner and an independent financial advisor?

The term ‘financial planner’ is not controlled in the UK. Anyone can use it. At Wren Sterling, we’re Independent Financial Advisors – which can be a bit of a mouthful. You can find out more about what we do in our financial planning brochure, but here’s the cliff notes.

Why should I make a financial plan?

A clear financial plan can give you a goal to work towards. It provides a structure to help you make the most of your money and achieve your financial goals. It can make the future less daunting by giving you actionable steps you can take today that will make a difference to your future.

  • What should a financial plan include?

Your financial plan should take note of your financial situation, your assets and outgoings, as well as future events where you’re expecting to need your funds .

    • Your financial situation – your budget, your assets and outgoings. Do you have funds for emergencies?
    • Risk – What role does risk play into your current financial planning? Are you comfortable with this level of risk?
    • Investment portfolio – What does your investment portfolio look like?
    • Retirement – when do you want to retire? What are your lifestyle expectations, and can you afford them?
    • Tax – Include your tax calculations. Make sure you’re not paying unnecessary tax.

We’ll often have an informal chat before proceeding to financial advice. We’ll get to know you and whether we can help. When you’re ready for financial advice you’ll need access to information about your income, savings, insurance policies, pensions and any debts – including mortgages.

You will also need to talk about your goals, what motivates you, and if there are any big life events in your future. It could also help to talk about any previous experiences with financial planning (what you did and didn’t like) and how you feel about investing.

  • What is the process with a financial planner?

What is the process with a financial planner?

We believe it’s important that you fully understand the process you’re going through and the options you have. This enables you to make confident and informed decisions about your future.

    • Gather the facts – In your first meeting we’ll get to know you, your hopes and financial aspirations. Our conversation will form the foundation of our recommendations for you.
    • Analysis – We’ll look at your assets and future expectations and gauge whether you’re on track to achieve your goals.
    • Build your plan – We’ll build a plan taking into account your previous experience and attitude to investment, explaining how our recommendations come together to deliver your financial objectives.
    • Implementation – Should you decide to adopt our recommendation, we’ll make the necessary arrangements for any plans and policies to be put in place.
    • Maintenance – You can choose to take one off financial advice, but our ongoing clients can have regular planning meetings to discuss any changes and keep your plans on track.

The value of your investments can go down as well as up, so you could get back less than you invested.
